Project Black PC (part 6)
Sorry about the dull name.
22nd March 2007

There is no point mounting a large fan shroud on the side of a PC unless the air can flow into the case. So this requires some cutting. I have drilled and tapped the holes so I can line the whole assembly up properly.

I am going to use a nibbler attached to a power drill. This cool little tool nibbles (as it name would suggest) nibbles away at the sheet steel at high speed. However doing it by eye is a little tricky so I decided to make a template that the head would butt-up against and guide me around the shape.

First I took a pint glass (It doesn't have to be a 2004 Twickenham Beer Festival one) and marked the radius.

Nice neat curve. Everything between the curve and the corner has to go.

Do not try this at home!
This belt sander is adapted to lock in to my work bench. It could get very messy if it got loose with the power switch locked on.

Must remember not to stand this side. That tube is where all the dust comes out.

Action shot!

After some quick measurement I found that if I line up the guide with the bottom of the cutting head right to the edge of the line I want to cut, when the wider part of the head is against the guide it will be cutting right on the line. Most impressed, that must have been designed in.

The panel all marked up to show me where to put the guide. As I only made one corner I will need to keep repositioning the guide, I thought this would be a good short cut and save the trouble of making an exact size guide.
